The #3776“ Century” Fountain Pen What qualities make for the ideal contemporary fountain pen? Sleek design, comfortable writing balance, smooth flow, and fast-drying ink… At the request of customers, we at Platinum Pen have gone back to the basics to address these issues. Every part and mechanism has been carefully studied and re-engineered. The result is the #3776 “Century,” designed on the base model of the popular #3776 series pens.
Celluloid is a flammable, semi-transparent material which is made by mixing nitric-cellulose (sulfuric acid and nitric acid are added to cellulose), camphor and alcohol. When coloured it is splendid. It softens at 90 degrees Celcius and hardens when cooled. As it is easy to cast and carve and also produce in a variety of colors and patterns, most pen barrels were made of this material many years ago. However, as it must be dried for more than 6 months to prevent deformation and twisting, it has been recognized as a difficult material. Recently, it has become popular again with those who pursue unusual antique designs.
