BU144 Burnham Fountain Pen and Pencil Set, boxed. (Soft Medium)
Date: c1950
Size: Capped - 128mm; posted - 154mm.
This medium-sized Burnham fountain pen set does not have a model number on the imprint, so I will not hazard a guess as to which model it is. Both pieces are made from a very attractive burgundy, grey and gold marbled pattern casein. They are both glossy with no surface scratching, and very unusually, the only plating wear I can see is to the very tip of the pencil. Looking at the two pieces carefully, and considering how clean the fountain pen was inside when I came to service it, I don't think either piece has been used more than once or twice at the most.
Fountain Pen
The cap is topped by a gold plated and slightly convex stud that holds on the washer style pocket clip. Around the lip of the cap are two narrow gold plated bands. The filling lever is gold plated. The cute little 14ct gold Burnham nib is in a fine point. The imprint to the side of the barrel is crisp and clear.
Pencil
This is a propel-repel pencil. You twist the cone to wind the 1.18mm lead in and out. The cap will unscrew to reveal the original and petrified, but apparently unused pink eraser. I have installed a fresh lead into the mechanism and it is all ready to go.
Box
Its always nice to see a pen set in its original box. This one has a floral patterend outer. It has wear to the corners and edges, and a couple of split corners on the lid as well, but it is all still there and has a very pleasing shape! Inside, the pad is made from a beige coloured corded satin.
I have fully serviced this set. The nib is very smooth and writes with a very good wet and consistent medium line. It is soft enough to have a pleasing springy action, and to provide some very attractive live width variation from a fine to a good wide medium - verging on a broad.
