MS769 Vintage Old Stock Pencil

Date: c1950

Size: Length - 114mm.

This pencil is part of a consignment of old stock pencils I recently purchased.  I think they are probably all from the 1950s or possibly slightly earlier, and all apparently unused.  None of the pencil appear to have a manufacturer's name on them, but many share unmistakeable design similarities and they all appear to have the same propel-only internal mechanism, so my best guess is that they are possibly left-over stock from a maker that went out of business in the 1950s when many traditional pen and pencil makers were finding it harder and harder to sell their products under the competition from the new-fangled ballpoints.

This pencil has an octagonal pink striated barrel, a black cone and crown, and green and white banding with a very distinctive and unusual stubby shape. I believe this pencil is made mostly of casein.    It has a straight, tapering and fluted gold plated pocket clip with a ball-shaped terminal and a gold plated point.  Where the base metal has started oxidising over the years, the gold plating on this pencil has some minor discolouration.  The pencil has its original 1.18mm lead in it and propels the lead at a twist of the crown.  There is a tiny bit of separation of the green and white bands at the point of this pencil, hence the reduced price, but this is basically a little agre-related shrinkage of the material.

This pencil works perfectly.

A very interesting survivor, and in lovely condition too.
