The 501 Champion pens were made from about 1948 to around the mid 1950s. They are quite uncommon - this is only the second one I have had for sale in the 20 years I have been selling vintage pens. It is in very good condition - save for a few very fine scratches to barrel and cap I can't see any problems with this pen at all. Everything is in very nice condition. The curiously shaped pocket clip has "WATERMANS" imprinted down the stem. It is gold filled, as is the single cap band and the spade-ended filling lever. The nib is made from 14ct gold and is a No. W-2B Waterman's nib, which, from the very sparse information that seems to be available on this pen, I believe is the "correct" nib for this pen and likely therefore to be the original nib. It is in a medium point.
I have fully serviced this pen. It fills well and writes with a very nice wet and consistent medium width line. The nib is really quite soft - I would classify it as semi-flexible. It will easily manage some very attractive line width variation from a fine to a good generous broad writing width.
A rather unusual Waterman model.
