ME255 Mentmore Chased Hard Rubber Pen (Soft Fine)
Date: c1930s
Size: Length - 132mm capped; 158mm posted.
This curious glossy black chased ebonite Mentmore pen is part of a small consignment that I have recently purchased. The pen looks like it has probably never been used, and apart from a little tarnishing to the side of the pocket clip and the cap band, which is probably due to the base metal migrating through the thin plating, it is in undamaged condition. Certainly, the ebonite cap and barrel shows beautifully deep and crisp machine engraving with no colour fading at all. The pen is marked "MENTMORE" on the barrel imprint but has no model name so I don't know what model this is. Judging by the small size of the 14ct gold nib, it is probably a "thrift" pen from the mid-1930s.
This example is a lever filled pen and it has a chrome-plated filling lever with a lovely teardrop shaped terminal
I have fully serviced this pen. The nib feels very smooth in use and also has enough softness to provide a tiny bit of line width variation as you write.
An unusual model.
